Ghosts in the Wood

Ghosts in the Wood is a touring exhibition of large-format photographic prints by award-winning artist Mike Smallcombe. Starting at Haldon Forest near Exeter at the end of 2008, the exhibition has since travelled to Kielder Forest in Northumbria and then onto Grizedale Forest in the Lake District where, due to its popularity, its timeframe has been extended. It is estimated that since it opened, upwards of 25,000 people have seen the exhibition.

With Ghosts in the Wood a continuing success, Mike looked to Sound in Theory to create a website that would showcase his exhibition. The site would need to be a point of reference for people that have visited the exhibition and provide information for people who are going to visit it, as well as showcase the exhibition to prospective curators.

As Ghosts in the Wood featured such striking images, Sound in Theory kept the website simple, using a flash slideshow as the main part of the site, which beautifully showed off the whole range of photographs that feature in the exhibition. With extremely simple navigation and limited text – just enough to provide a bit of background information about the exhibition and contact details – the full flash website captures the spirit of the exhibition by putting the focus on the pictures rather than the words.
