Two Degrees Beyond

Personal development specialists 2°beyond had an exciting variety of company strands on which to build their website. As well as providing bespoke personal development and leadership services for schools and businesses, in early 2009, 2°beyond Founder Duncan Kenny will make a challenging unsupported expedition to the North Pole.

Seeking to raise the profile of its personal development courses and the expedition Duncan will embark on, 2°beyond (not your average personal development company) invited Sound in Theory (not your average visual design agency) to create its website.

After settling on a design Duncan was happy with, Sound in Theory constructed HTML and CSS templates for pages the site would serve. Each page incorporates encouraging images and crafted copy into a slick and ergonomic design – a simple colour scheme forming the backdrop to the site. Whilst bringing crispness, consistency and predictability to the navigation and layout, we made the site’s navigation flexible for expansion, and included easy links from the front page to 2°beyond’s main client base. We also built an easy to use backend system, which allows Duncan to update the news pages as required.

The challenge was to explain with clarity about the three strands of the company: personal development for schools, personal development for businesses and Duncan’s expedition; whilst draw them together to reflect 2°beyond as a coherent, specialist company.

Key members of 2°beyond called in on our Exeter office with a host of content about their company. After brainstorming ideas with our copywriter, we refocused the editorial, establishing rules for aggregating content – pruning unrelated information that confuses users rather than helping. Considering the requirements for search engine optimisation, the tidy copy now refines and explains each separate strand of the company, whilst indicating how they complement each other. The substantial Expedition content was trimmed, yet still includes a variety of information about Duncan’s expedition to inform and excite.

For user accessibility, content was placed on separating pages. Sound in Theory distributed the About Us content along a four-part sub-nav and the Expedition content along an eight-part sub-nav – making it easy for users to know where to look, while read manageable, bite-size content.

Functional, exciting, and featuring everything the company needs – Twodegreesbeyond.co.uk is a fantastic example of the terrific websites Sound in Theory can create on a small budget.
